Frequently Asked Questions
Some of the common questions that we come across. Contact Us if you’re looking for a trusted sauna heater installation
Do I need a permit for a sauna installation in Toronto?
In Ontario, you generally don’t need a building permit for a detached accessory structure under 10 square meters (107 sq. ft.). However, an Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) permit is almost always required for the dedicated heater wiring.
How much does a sauna heater installation cost in Toronto?
Electrical hookups in the GTA typically range from $1,500 to $3,200 depending on the distance from your main panel and whether you need a service upgrade. With that said, every installation is unique and costs can very. Feel free to Contact Us for a free, in-home consultation.
What are the electrical requirements for a sauna heater?
Most residential heaters (6kW–9kW) require a 240V dedicated circuit with a 30-amp or 40-amp breaker and 10-gauge or 8-gauge wiring.
How often should I replace my sauna stones?
For residential use, every 2-5 years. If you notice the sauna is taking longer to heat up or the stones are crumbling, they are no longer radiating heat efficiently and should probably be replaced.
Is my heater powerful enough for an outdoor sauna?
In Toronto’s -20°C winters, a top loaded, 6kW sauna heater may struggle. We recommend a heater with a higher kW rating and high stone capacity for better heat retention.
If you have concerns regarding your current set up, give us a call for a free, in-home consultation.
My sauna is taking too long to heat up, what could be the problem?
If your sauna is taking too long to heat up, it usually boils down to one of the following issues:
Burned-Out Element: Most heaters have 3 elements. If one is dead, the heater is only working at 66% capacity.
Loose Wiring: Heat cycles can loosen connections at the terminal block, causing a voltage drop.
Tightly Packed Stones: Stones should be placed loosely. If they are packed too tightly, heat stays trapped in the heater rather than circulating into the room.
Lack of Insulation: Uninsulated “single-wall” saunas (like some barrel kits) struggle in Ontario winters.
The “Glass Factor”: Every square foot of glass or stone wall acts like a “cold sink.” You need a more powerful heater to compensate for these surfaces.
Underpowered Heater: If the heater’s kilowatt (kW) rating is too low for the cubic footage of the room, it will never reach the target temperature. For a standard Toronto home sauna, you generally need 1kW for every 45–50 cubic feet.
Broken sauna?
- Burning smell?
- Sauna takes longer to heat up?
- Sauna is losing heat too quickly?

We had a complex sauna build at our cottage. Sauna Electricians came all the way up and managed to install without causing any damage to the external or internal walls. Super happy with the end result. It’s rare to find an electrician who specializes in this niche.
