Frequently Asked Questions
Some of the common questions that we come across. Contact Us if you’re experiencing any issues with your sauna heater.
Why does my circuit breaker trip every time I turn the sauna on?
This usually points to a shorted heating element or moisture infiltration in the junction box. Over time, the outer casing of an element can crack, allowing electricity to “leak” to the ground. If you have a GFCI breaker, even a tiny amount of moisture or a slightly degraded element will cause an instant trip. Give us a call, and we’ll get it sorted.
What is this ticking sounds coming from the sauna controller?
1. Fluctuating Control Voltage / Weak Signal
The internal computer board uses a low-voltage signal to tell the high-voltage relay to stay closed. If that control voltage drops or fluctuates, the relay can’t hold its position and will rapidly “chatter” (click on and off).
This is frequently caused by a faulty control board, loose control wiring connections between the keypad and the power box, or a failing internal transformer.
2. Failing Relay Contacts (Mechanical Wear)
Relays are mechanical switches with a limited lifespan. Over time, passing high currents through them creates micro-arcs that burn, pit, or weld the metal contacts inside.
When the contacts become pitted or worn, they create high electrical resistance. The relay struggles to maintain a solid magnetic hold, causing it to drop out and pull back in rapidly. This is a very common issue on older units or heavily used commercial controllers.
3. Temperature Sensor or Limit Switch Issues
The controller relies on constant data from the temperature sensor and the high-limit safety switch to decide when to feed power to the elements.
If the temperature sensor wire is loose, damaged, or experiencing electrical interference, it can send erratic, rapidly spiking temperature readings to the main board. The board responds by trying to turn the heater on and off a dozen times a second.
4. Controller Brand Defect or Software Loop
Certain smart, WiFi-enabled premium controller brands can experience firmware or logic loops during their power-up sequence or right when heating is initiated. If a digital unit starts clicking randomly immediately after turning the heating “ON,” it often points to a component defect on the main relay board itself.

Why is the sauna taking twice as long to heat up as it used to?
You likely have a burned-out heating element. Most heaters use 3 separate elements; if one dies, the heater still runs but at only 66% power. This causes “stalling” where the sauna never quite hits the target temperature. Other causes include crumbling sauna stones that have “choked” the airflow or a voltage drop due to loose connections at the main electrical panel.
Is it normal to hear a buzzing sound or smell burning when the heater is on?
While a slight “ticking” as metal expands is normal, a loud buzzing or electrical smell is a red flag. A buzzing sound usually indicates a failing contactor (the heavy-duty relay that switches the power).
A burning smell, specifically an “acrid” or “plastic” scent, often means a wire terminal has loosened and is melting the insulation. Shut off the breaker immediately and give us a call.
Why is my heater not turning on even though the control panel has power?
The most common culprit is a tripped High-Limit Reset switch. This is a safety thermal-cutout designed to kill power if the heater gets too hot. The likely issue is a failed contactor or a faulty timer in the control box that isn’t sending the “call for heat” signal.
Why does my sauna heater shut off in the middle of a session?
This is often an airflow or ventilation issue. If your intake vent (under the heater) or exhaust vent is blocked, heat builds up inside the heater shell rather than circulating into the room. This triggers the high-limit safety switch to shut the unit down. Ensure your stones are loosely packed and your vents are clear to allow the heater to “breathe.”

We had a complex sauna build at our cottage. Sauna Electricians came all the way up and managed to install without causing any damage to the external or internal walls. Super happy with the end result. It’s rare to find an electrician who specializes in this niche.
